What is Adenovirus Type II?
Canine Adenovirus Type II (CAV-2) is a virus that causes upper respiratory infection and enteric (intestinal) diseases. It is a major cause of infectious tracheobronchitis, also known as kennel cough.

.

What Are The Symptoms of Adenovirus Type II?
The most common symptoms of kennel cough are a dry, hacking cough followed by retching, and coughing up a white foamy discharge. The cough is brought on by an inflammation of the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi (the air passages to the lungs). Some dogs also develop conjunctivitis (“pink eye”), rhinitis (inflamed nasal mucous membrane), and a nasal discharge. The incubation period is one week.

It is highly contagious. Because it is air born or passed by direct contact with secretions, it passes easily from an infected animal.

Go to your vet, they have ways to diagnose it.

What is the Treatment for Parainfluenza-Adenovirus Type II?
In more severe cases of kennel cough, vets prescribe antibiotics like doxycycline. However, vets won’t prescribe steroids or cough suppressants because these drugs could have an immunosuppressant effect and hamper the dog’s ability to recover. Bronchodilators may be used to relieve coughing symptoms. Dogs with severe kennel cough symptoms should be observed closely to ensure that they don’t develop pneumonia

How Can I Prevent My Puppy From Getting Parainfluenza-Adenovirus Type II?
Properly vaccinate your puppy. Please note: being vaccinated against the Adenovirus Type II does NOT vaccinate your puppy from kennel cough. It helps to eliminate a virus that makes your puppy susceptible to kennel cough as well as the Adenovirus type II itself. You need the bordetella vaccine to help prevent kennel cough.
