Where Do All these Colors Come From?

 Are They Purebred?
 Can You Register these Colors with AKC? 

 Are you wondering where all these schnauzer colors are coming from? Are these colors even purebred  and can you register them with AKC? The answer is – Yes, AKC does recognize AND does register all  these colors as purebred Schnauzers. You’re welcome to contact AKC for more information regarding these colors and their registration. As you choose a puppy, keep in mind that alot of these colors will change over time and look different from 4 weeks old to 4 years old so we encourage you to do your research, and get comfortable with all the colors so you can know what to expect and have alot of  fun picking out your favorite one!

 Black & Silver

AKC Registration Color Code: 016
Born with solid black bodies and copper/bronze markings (which will turn a silvery white) on  their eyebrows, muzzle, inside the ears, across the chest, down the legs on the feet and  underneath the tail.  They have black eyes, black pads and a black nose.

What are Phantom Black & Silvers?

The word “phantom” is used to describe how bright the markings are at birth. That’s it. Phantom Black & Silvers Schnauzers are NO different than a Black & Silver Schnauzer.  They are NOT 2 separate colors.

Liver & Tan (chocolate version of a black & silver)

 AKC Registration Color Code: 124
 Born with solid chocolate bodies and cream/ tan or even white markings on their eyebrows, muzzle, inside  the ears, across the chest, down the legs on the feet and underneath the tail. They have  brown or green eyes, chocolate pads & a chocolate nose.

 AKC Registration Color Code: 007
 Born with solid black bodies. It is acceptable for black schnauzers to have some white on  their chin, chest and/or tips of their toes. They have black eyes, black pads and a black nose.

What is the Difference Between a “Liver” and a “Chocolate?”

Nothing.  The word “liver”  just means chocolate. So a “liver schnauzer” and a “chocolate schnauzer” are the same.

Liver Or Chocolate  (chocolate version of a black)

Chocolate (liver) schnauzers are basically a brown version of a black schnauzer. Chocolate (liver) schnauzers are born with solid brown bodies. Some white on their chin, chest and/or tips of their toes is acceptable. They have brown or green eyes, chocolate pads a chocolate nose.

Liver (vs) Liver Tan & Liver Pepper

The liver colors often confuse people because they all have brown or green eyes, a chocolate nose, chocolate pads & brown colored hair. So  how do you tell the difference? It’s NOT that one is lighter and the other is darker because they all vary in shade.

Liver Pepper (chocolate version of salt & pepper)

AKC Registration Color Code: 498
Born in a variety of shades from very dark to very light. Liver Peppers have banded hairs of brown/chocolate  that  always fade out into a lighter brown/chocolate as adults. They have brown OR green eyes, chocolate pads and a  chocolate nose.

Liver Pepper (vs) Salt & Peppers

These 2 colors can be very difficult to tell apart at birth because both are born the color of a brown paper bag. Both  vary in shade. Both are born with banded hairs. Both have a thick strip down their back. etc…So what IS different  about them.

Platinum Silver (NOT the same as a white)

Platinum silvers are the lightest shade of salt & pepper schnauzers you can find. They are born the color of a brown  paper bag and have banded hairs that turns into an extremely light silver, some can even appear almost white. They typically have black masks but not always. They all  have Black  eyes, black pads and a black nose.

Remember “Platinum Silvers” are the lightest shade of Salt & Peppers so a Platinum Silver Parti is considered a “salt  and pepper parti.” However, instead of their spots turning gray/ silver they turn silvery/white. Born with black  eyes, black pads and a black nose.

White Schnauzers are born solid white.  Their skin tone underneath their hair has a silver/black tint to  it. They have Black eyes, black pads and a black nose.

White Chocolate (chocolate version of a white)

White Schnauzers are born solid white it’s acceptable for them to have a slight cream tone to them or  even down their spine.. Their skin tone underneath their hair is usually a pinkish hue. They have  brown OR green eyes, chocolate pads and a chocolate nose.

White Chocolate (vs) White

Yes, they are both white in color but when you put them side by side you can really see a visual difference between them. White Chocolates have green or brown eyes, chocolate nose & chocolate pads with a pinkish hue to their skin-tone. Where your whites have black eyes, black nose, black pads and a darker hue to their skin.

Salt & Pepper Parti

 Salt and Pepper Parti Schnauzers are born with solid white bodies and have brown banded hairs  (which will turn silver).  They have black eyes, black pads and a black nose.

Black & White Parti’s are also know as Black Partis.  Born with white bodies and have spots/patches of black. Each Black Parti will vary in pattern. They have black eyes, black pads and a black nose.

Alot of families get confused between a black and white parti (also know as a black parti) and a black and silver parti. The difference is very simple. Merle schnauzers are NOT purebreds. However, their are various generations of them which means some will be closer to a purebred schnauzer than others.
